Hello everyone!
With all that is happening is the world in response to COVID-19 it seems people are really taking a look into what they can do at home to be more sustainable. At Mellott Chicken Coops we love that we can provide a safe, dependable home for chickens that can expand on this dream. I mean chickens are one of the coolest animals around, how many animals can give you breakfast just about EVERYDAY?! I mean WOW.
Our family loves this way of life and are always looking to expand our own homesteading dream. We have quite a bit of experience with raising farm animals but not so much in the world of planting. I want that to change. Having healthy fresh fruit and vegetables picked from the garden has always been a dream of mine. This year Ben has come up with a raised garden bed plan that I hope will jumpstart our harvesting.
He made it all out of Redwood with a greenhouse cover! Cool right? The cover will have hinges on one long side so you can lift it up and garden. Living up in the mountains of San Diego we do get snow and frosty nights so I am hoping this will extend our growing season as well as able us to start sooner. We also plan on making an interchangeable wire top that we can put on in the summer when the greenhouse isn’t needed – one garden bed two ways!
Here are the specs:
All Redwood
Approx 4ft wide
Approx 8ft long
Approx 1ft deep
Hinges on one of the long sides so top can be lifted up and gardening can be done.
We also plan on adding our 1/2in x 1in 16 gauge wire on the bottom to deter pesky gophers.
I’ve made a garden plan and have started some seeds, once the rainy weather has passed I plan on setting up our bed behind the house and planting away!
If you are interested in one of these beds we can build our greenhouse version for $550 and our wire version for $500. Wire can be added to the bottom for $50.
Is anyone interested in my garden plan? If so, I hope to put it in a blog post soon for all to check out – so stay tuned. If you have any tips, tricks or suggestions for growing here in San Diego or Southern California I’d love to hear them!
