Picking Out Your Chicken Coop

Shopping for your feathered friends home can get a little exhausting with all the options out there. So I wanted to put together a little fun this vs. that of our options. We have one style with just a few options to think about so hopefully this will help streamline the process of you picking out your Mellott Chicken Coop!

Hello everyone!

With all that is happening is the world in response to COVID-19 it seems people are really taking a look into what they can do at home to be more sustainable. At Mellott Chicken Coops we love that we can provide a safe, dependable home for chickens that can expand on this dream. I mean chickens are one of the coolest animals around, how many animals can give you breakfast just about EVERYDAY?! I mean WOW.

Our family loves this way of life and are always looking to expand our own homesteading dream. We have quite a bit of experience with raising farm animals but not so much in the world of planting. I want that to change. Having healthy fresh fruit and vegetables picked from the garden has always been a dream of mine. This year Ben has come up with a raised garden bed plan that I hope will jumpstart our harvesting.

He made it all out of Redwood with a greenhouse cover! Cool right? The cover will have hinges on one long side so you can lift it up and garden. Living up in the mountains of San Diego we do get snow and frosty nights so I am hoping this will extend our growing season as well as able us to start sooner. We also plan on making an interchangeable wire top that we can put on in the summer when the greenhouse isn’t needed – one garden bed two ways!

Here are the specs:

All Redwood

Approx 4ft wide

Approx 8ft long

Approx 1ft deep

Hinges on one of the long sides so top can be lifted up and gardening can be done.

We also plan on adding our 1/2in x 1in 16 gauge wire on the bottom to deter pesky gophers.

I’ve made a garden plan and have started some seeds, once the rainy weather has passed I plan on setting up our bed behind the house and planting away!

If you are interested in one of these beds we can build our greenhouse version for $550 and our wire version for $500. Wire can be added to the bottom for $50.

Is anyone interested in my garden plan? If so, I hope to put it in a blog post soon for all to check out – so stay tuned. If you have any tips, tricks or suggestions for growing here in San Diego or Southern California I’d love to hear them!

Hello world!

Welcome to Mellott Chicken Coops! You have stumbled upon our site where we feature our hand built chickens coops. Right now we offer our standard options that include:

  • 5×8 Coop
  • 6×10 Coop
  • 5×8 Run
  • 6×10 Run
  • Pre-Fab option for all our coops + runs.

We have been asked to do minor customizations that include different sizing options and/or accessory changes to our standard line up that sometimes we are able to accommodate. As of right now we only are able to do our coop building part-time so some of the requests are unfortunately denied at this time. Once we are able to commit to our coop building full-time we hope to do as many customizations as necessary. If you have questions about seeing if something would be possible, please always feel free to contact us.

Please explore our site and remember to check out our Facebook and our Instagram pages to see what we have been up to.

We hope to add fun elements such as offering fun extra coop accessories like flower boxes, a “Meet Our Flock” page along with “Benny’s Chicks” – a small venture where our son will be raising egg-laying aged hens to sell with our coops! So stay tuned and feel free to send us your email for updates!
